Overview: University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS)
The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) was established in 1993 and is located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, making it the world’s northernmost institution for higher education and research. As a state-owned research-intensive and teaching-focused centre, UNIS stands out for its Arctic specialisation and unique setting within the High North. With around 660 students annually, drawn from over 40 nations, and a faculty of approximately 80 researchers and lecturers, UNIS serves as a hub for advanced Arctic studies and field-based research. UNIS is renowned for collaborative research, partnering with over 130 universities and institutions globally, and contributes to pan-Arctic consortia, such as UArctic and SIOS. Its publication record is robust—UNIS researchers produce over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles annually, underscoring its contribution to polar science and international knowledge exchange.
