The University of Turku (UTU) is one of the leading universities in Finland and among the largest in terms of enrollment. It is also one of the oldest in the country. The public university is known for its internationalization, high research activity, and the quality of its academic programs. As such, UTU is a member of the Coimbra Group, a consortium of over 40 prestigious European universities aimed at collaboration.
Established in 1920, UTU was founded on the idea of having a purely Finnish university given that Finland had just gained its independence as a nation at the time. To put up the university, more than 22,000 people contributed funds. With the university established, UTU quickly expanded as it opened two other campuses and procured more properties.
Currently, UTU is organized into seven faculties focusing on Education, Humanities, Economics, Social Sciences, Medicine, Law, and Science and Engineering, as well as five independent units. It offers over 1,500 bachelor’s degrees, 1,700 master’s degrees, and 180 doctoral degrees, while international learners can enroll in its three undergraduate and 17 master’s programs taught in English. Among the courses UTU offers, the most highly regarded ones include Nursing, Education, Sociology, Life Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medicine, Psychology, and Arts and Humanities.
Research in UTU is conducted in its faculties and independent units, as their research strengths are reflective of their academic programs. Often, these studies are the collaborative output of researchers from different countries. The studies are consolidated into six areas of knowledge: digital futures; biofuture; sea and maritime studies; children, young people, and learning; cultural memory and societal change; and drug development and diagnostics.
UTU’s main campus is located near the city center and its area is shared with other institutions like the Åbo Akademi University and the Turku University Hospital. It features sports facilities and services, expansive open spaces, a cathedral, bars and restaurants, libraries, shops, and a nearby railway station. Students can book their stay at the various modes of lodging offered by the city.
As of 2020, UTU welcomes more than 20,000 students and 3,000 employees. It has produced more than 6,000 scholarly publications and amassed a significant number of funded research projects coming from organizations like the European Union, the Academy of Finland, and Business Finland. Stemming from research, many startups and spinoffs have also been established by the university.
UTU’s notable alumni include Sauli Nii,nistö (Finnish president), Paula Lehtomäki (politician), Mauno Koivisto (politician), Kaisa Matomäki (mathematician), Timo Airaksinen (professor), and Heli Laaksonen (poet).
As suggested by its motto, UTU fosters education and free science administered through its multidisciplinary research and academic programs. It also actively collaborates with its regional community and welcomes learners, teachers, and researchers from all over the world to be part of the institution.
