The University of Potsdam is a modern public institution of higher learning located in Brandenburg, Germany. Founded in 1991, the university is relatively young, but its innovative teaching and research methods have propelled the institution to the top echelon of German institutions. As of 2019, the University of Potsdam was the largest institution of higher learning in the federal state of Brandenburg and the fourth-largest university in the broad Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area.
The university came into existence in 1991 when the Karl Liebknecht College of Education merged with the Brandenburg State College as well as a number of other smaller institutions in Brandenburg. From this amalgamation the University of Potsdam was born, and like its parent institutions, it still lays strong emphasis on teacher training.
The University of Potsdam has three campuses that are situated on the outskirts of the historical city of Potsdam—the capital of the state of Brandenburg. Embedded in a region of interconnected lakes, the city is renowned for the remarkable series of cultural landmarks and buildings, some of which accommodate the university’s faculties, institutes, and departments.
The main campus, New Palace, is located in Sanssouci—the largest World Heritage Site in Germany. The campus is home to the university’s Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Sports, and the Institute of Mathematics. There are two other campuses within the city—namely Golm and Babelsberg—which house the other faculties of the institution. The unique and strategic location of the university in Potsdam makes it a nice place for outdoor enthusiasts. It is also only 30 minutes away from Berlin, Germany’s capital, by public transportation.
At present, the University of Potsdam is home to more than 21,299 students distributed among its various faculties. There are over 2,800 university staff including more than 300 professors and 655 academic staff.
In total, the University of Potsdam has eight faculties: Human Sciences, Law, Science, Arts, History, Economics and Social Sciences, Digital Engineering, and Health Sciences. The faculties are divided into departments and institutes which enable the university to deliver highly competitive programs of study including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees with an innovative interdisciplinary focus. Not to mention, it partners with 59 international universities and 17 faculties to deliver 29 international degree programs, out of which 20 are taught primarily in English.
Aside from offering a wide variety of programs, the university also provides state-of-the-art equipment, first-class laboratories, and a well-equipped library to help students in their academic endeavors. In addition, it works with a number of affiliated institutes and scientific institutions in the region. Most importantly, the University of Potsdam has multiple research initiatives such as the Center for Molecular Water Science. Plus, it closely cooperates with national research corporations such as the Berlin Center for Genomics in Biodiversity Research (BeGenDiv), Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence (SCIoI), and Competence Cluster Nutritional Research (NutriAct).
