The university came into existence in 1991 when the Karl Liebknecht College of Education merged with the Brandenburg State College as well as a number of other smaller institutions in Brandenburg. From this amalgamation the University of Potsdam was born, and like its parent institutions, it still lays strong emphasis on teacher training.

Embedded in a region of interconnected lakes, the city is renowned for the remarkable series of cultural landmarks and buildings, some of which accommodate the university’s faculties, institutes, and departments.
The main campus, New Palace, is located in Sanssouci—the largest World Heritage Site in Germany. The campus is home to the university’s Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Sports, and the Institute of Mathematics. There are two other campuses within the city—namely Golm and Babelsberg—which house the other faculties of the institution.
