The Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (University of Naples Federico II) is the world’s oldest public nonsectarian university. As well, it is one of the oldest learning, teaching, and research institutions that have been continuously operating since its creation. Founded in 1224, it was originally established to train administrative staff.
The university was founded by Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire. Throughout its existence, it has helped in the development of influential figures with great contributions to their particular fields. Notable graduates and faculty include the theologian and philosopher Thomas Aquinas, the astronaut Luca Parmitano, and the mathematician Renato Caccioppoli.
