Overview

The University of Klagenfurt, also known as Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (AAU), is a federal institute for higher education and one of the largest research organizations in the state of Carinthia. Located in Klagenfurt, Austria, it is one of the few campus universities in the country. As a research university, it has numerous active initiatives. Moreover, research is well integrated into its curriculum and student activities.

The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs. Furthermore, it offers various programs in English across different departments. Students can choose a focus of study offered by its departments, which are organized into different faculties. These include the Faculty of Management and Economics, the Faculty of Technical Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, and the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Additionally, it offers extension programs (EP) that aims to add further competencies to the core degree programs. Courses and relevant credits can be taken in two domains: Digital Competencies and Intercultural/Transcultural Competencies. Also, extension curricula (EC) are special programs composed of electives. These structured courses are developed to allow students to gain additional knowledge from a different department. Some of the most notable extension curricula are Analysis for Technology, Entrepreneurship, Media and Communications Science, and Science and Technology Research, to name a few.

While AAU offers a wide range of study topics and focus, its research fields are geared towards specific areas of interest. Among these are visual culture, self-organizing systems, sustainability, energy management and energy technology, Humans in the Digital Age (HDA), networked and autonomous systems, education research, and public health.

Aside from various university research initiatives, it also maintains active cooperation with other universities and organizations. As such, various institutes have been established for these programs such as the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC), the Innovation Centre “KI4LIFE,” and the Institute For Comparative Media And Communication Studies.

Its research initiatives and academic reputation aside, campus life at the University of Klagenfurt is composed of dynamic academic activities balanced with the suburban setting's laid-back atmosphere. The campus occupies more than 10 hectares of land, the majority of which are unspoiled green spaces. Klagenfurt's historic city center offers culture and art while the nearby Wörthersee is a popular summer resort.

Students have access to various facilities and services within the campus such as accommodations, dining and catering, and more. They can also build valuable networks in various industries through the Lakeside Science and Technology Park, which is right next to the campus.
