The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest institution offering tertiary education in Hong Kong. This research university prizes innovation and interdisciplinarity. It is a founding member of Universitas 21, a consortium of research-led universities with 27 members in 18 different territories and countries.
Originally founded to be the English-speaking university for China, it ranks as the most internationalized university in the world today. Around half of HKU’s faculty are from overseas. Moreover, HKU is known for its strong programs in Pre-Clinical & Health, Engineering & Technology, and the Arts and Humanities.
First opened on March 11, 1912, HKU started with only three faculty, namely Arts, Engineering, and Medicine. In 1916, it held its first congregation with just 23 graduates. By the dawn of World War II, HKU had grown to add the Faculty of Science. After a standstill in operations caused by the war, the university pursued reconstruction efforts coupled with new structural development. This laid another brick on the foundation for a modern HKU.
Today, HKU has 10 faculties with their own departments. All of them provide supervision and teaching for postgraduate-level research. The university also espouses a strategically-oriented research approach with its 70+ research centers and institutes.
The university focuses on 14 strategically-oriented research themes under four areas. These areas are (1) SmartBio & HealthTech, (2) Future Innovative Technologies, (3) Smart Systems & Sustainable Society, and (4) Intelligence, Data, eCommerce & Automation.
HKU fosters an outcome-based approach in its cross-disciplinary research. Also, the institute emphasizes inter-institutional collaboration. Furthermore, research efforts promote social and technological innovation, private-public partnerships, and incubation of entrepreneurial efforts.
The institution has a rich history of producing remarkable graduates. Its Faculty of Medicine evolved from the 1887-founded Hong Kong College of Medicine where one of the early College alumni was Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. In the modern era, notable alumni include Michael Suen, a former Secretary of Education for Hong Kong, the famous actress/singer Ava Yu, and the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam.
The HKU espouses what it deems as the 3+1 Is: Internationalization, Innovation, and Interdisciplinarity to create educational and societal impact. Students are encouraged to be global citizens, innovate for social good, and develop new ways of thinking and doing things.
