Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th) is one of the oldest and largest universities in Greece with its campus covering an area of 230,000 square meters. It is situated about 34 miles (55 km) east of Thessaloniki and is recognized as one of the best tertiary education institutions in the country. Named after the famous philosopher Aristotle, the institution is also known as Aristotelian University or the University of Thessaloniki.

Lessons are mainly taught in the Greek language but there are also programs and courses for international students taught in English, Italian, German, and French. The university consists of 36 departments distributed over eleven schools. These include the School of Exact Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Philosophy, Faculty of Law and School of Theology.

There are various notable professors among the faculty of the university. One of the most famous among them is Manolis Andronikos who discovered what was considered as one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century: the unopened tomb of Philip II of Macedon. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki also produced various notable alumni like Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer, the poet Dimitris Kraniotis whose works were translated into 25 languages, and Ioannis Melissanidis who bagged a gold medal for floor exercise in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

The university has strong programs for art and culture with its A.U.Th Orchestra holding concerts all over the country. Likewise, it hosts the J. Mandakas Chorus, which is recognized locally and internationally. Different student cultural groups are present within the campus and they dabble in various fields, such as in arts like music, fine arts, debate, comics, drama, etc. There is also the Student Week, which is an annual cultural event held inside the campus, which lasts for three to four weeks.

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded by Alexandros Papanastassiou in 1925 to help boost the local culture and economy of Greece. The development process of the school can be divided into three stages with the first one happening in 1926, followed by the second stage in 1951, and the third stage that started in 1975 up to the present. Each of them brought innovation and programs to the university as time passed.

A.U.Th performs extensive research in various scientific fields while being in constant cooperation with other universities, local and international research centers, and organizations. This is made possible by a large number of the school’s faculty members and laboratories. There is also a dedicated body, the A.U.Th Research committee, which oversees the coordination and resource allocation for research done at the university.
