The Amirkabir University of Technology is an award-winning public research university in Iran. Formerly known as Tehran Polytechnic, it is the second university established in the country. The institution is also the oldest technical educational institution and known as the “Mother of Engineering Universities” in the country. It has some of the most competitive admissions for undergraduate and graduate students as they only accept the top 1% of passers of Konkour, also known as the Nationwide University Entrance Exam.
Its main campus is located in the very center of Tehran City. It holds the largest student and faculty population among the campuses. Additionally, it is accessible to Vali Asr station, which is used by many students. The Mahshar Campus was established in 2001 in the province of Khouzestan. It has close cooperation with the national company of the petroleum industry. Thus, it offers programs related to mining, petroleum, and engineering.
On the other hand, the Bandar Abbas Campus was established in Hormozgan, which is home to the country’s marine industries. Similarly, many of the programs offered on the campus are relevant to the industry. The university is noted as a pioneer in innovation and research in Iran. It has an active and close connection and cooperation with other educational institutions and industrial companies, especially in the field of oil and gas. As such, many of its research projects are funded by these companies on top of its funding from the government. Many of these projects are managed under the Research and Technology Center of AUT. It also publishes the Amirkabir Journal of Science and Technology, which showcases the works and achievements in science and engineering.
AUT continues to be the center of innovation in learning and research in the region. It is one of the premier universities in elearning systems in the country, which started its operations in 2004. Furthermore, it has established partnerships with many universities, locally and abroad. For example, there is an ongoing joint program between the University of Birmingham and AUT.
