Data Sources and Bibliometric Information
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists in Portugal Ranking is based primarily on comprehensive bibliometric data extracted from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other reputable sources. The citation-based metrics that underpin this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the most recent and accurate dataset for evaluation. Each scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that specifically accounts for papers and citations restricted to the examined discipline, allowing for a precise and relevant appraisal of research impact within Social Sciences and Humanities.
Scope and Selection Criteria
To create an inclusive and rigorous list, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles across all disciplines were initially examined using diverse bibliometric databases. Within this extensive pool, 12,000 scientists were identified as specialists in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Eligibility for inclusion in the ranking required a minimum D-index of 30 and that a majority of a scientist’s tier publications fall within the Social Sciences and Humanities domains.
Additionally, qualitative factors such as awards and achievements in the field were carefully considered to complement the bibliometric indicators. The D-index threshold for considering top researchers is systematically adjusted in increments of 10 relative to the estimated number of scholars in each discipline, while ensuring the top 1% of leading scientists are captured. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary relevance, there is a stipulation that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index should not exceed 30%.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing that bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture a scholar’s impact, the Research.com team conducts thorough manual verification of all scientist profiles. This rigorous review process involves cross-referencing publications against a broad array of trustworthy academic sources. While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s rank, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary signal indicating substantive contribution to their respective fields.
The ranking position itself is concretely established using each researcher’s D-index, informed by data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are widely regarded as leading bibliometric resources in the scientific community. We encourage readers and interested parties to explore our methodology page for an in-depth understanding of the processes and standards involved in constructing this ranking.
