Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
This ranking was compiled by examining 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric datasets encompassing all academic disciplines. Specifically within the Social Sciences and Humanities domain, 2,000 scientists were analyzed in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist's D-index had to meet or exceed a threshold of 30, ensuring a high standard of scholarly impact within the discipline.
Additionally, a majority of a qualifying scientist's tier publications needed to fall squarely within the Social Sciences and Humanities fields. Awards and recognized achievements in these areas were also factored into the evaluation process. The D-index threshold for top researchers is calibrated incrementally—in steps of 10—based on the estimated total number of scholars per discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars are systematically incorporated into the list, maintaining both exclusivity and representativeness.
Moreover, to ensure the discipline-specific impact closely reflects the researcher’s overall impact, a proximity criterion of 30% or less between the general H-index and the D-index was applied, reinforcing the relevance of the ranking to the chosen discipline.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the multifaceted contributions of individual scholars, the Research.com team undertook rigorous manual verification and cross-correlation of scientist profiles against publications indexed in a wide array of trustworthy and authoritative sources.
While these verification practices do not directly influence the ranking position—which is solely established using the D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef—they serve to substantiate the reliability and integrity of the underlying data. Additionally, though not a formal ranking criterion, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and reputable conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s scholarly contribution within their field.
OpenAlex and CrossRef remain the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the research community, forming the foundational data pool for this ranking.
