A scientist's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that evaluates only those papers and citation counts relevant to the specific discipline of Psychology. This ensures that the ranking accurately reflects contributions within the field rather than general scholarly output.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking framework reviewed a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a broad array of bibliometric data sources covering all academic disciplines. Among these, 1,000 scientists specializing in Psychology were specifically examined in detail.
To qualify for inclusion, a researcher’s D-index had to be at least 30, and the majority of their tier publications were required to be within the domain of Psychology. Additionally, awards and achievements pertinent to the field of Psychology were also considered as important qualifiers.
The D-index threshold for inclusion varies in increments of 10, depending on the estimated total number of scholars in the discipline, thereby ensuring that the top 1% of leading Psychology researchers are captured in the list. Furthermore, the methodology mandates a proximity of 30% or less between a researcher’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index to validate relevance and specialization in Psychology.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the nuances of scholarly output, the Research.com team conducted careful manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-referencing publications across a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources to authenticate the data and reduce potential errors.
While not directly affecting ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings has been identified as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution within Psychology. The primary ranking metric remains the D-index, leveraging data from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most authoritative and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the research community.
