Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in Germany Ranking is grounded in comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data repositories. The citation-based metrics employed for establishing the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that exclusively considers publications and citation metrics pertinent to the discipline of Political Science. This discipline-specific approach ensures a focused and precise evaluation of scholarly impact within the field.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
To compile the ranking, an extensive examination was conducted involving 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a range of bibliometric data sources encompassing all disciplines. Within this universe, 107 scientists specializing in Political Science were identified and assessed. Eligibility for inclusion in the ranking required a minimum D-index of 20, in addition to a majority of tier publications falling within the domain of Political Science. Beyond quantitative indicators, scientists’ awards and significant achievements within the Political Science arena were taken into account to provide a richer context of scholarly excellence.
The threshold for the D-index to qualify as a top researcher varies in increments of 10, calibrated according to the total estimated number of scholars within each discipline. This dynamic threshold is designed to ensure that the top 1% of leading experts in Political Science are incorporated. Additionally, to verify discipline relevance, a proximity criterion was applied, requiring that the disparity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index not exceed 30%.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot perfectly encapsulate scholarly contributions, the Research.com team has implemented rigorous verification practices. All candidate scientist profiles underwent manual scrutiny and were cross-referenced against publications listed in a broad array of authoritative, peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. While the count of publications in prestigious venues serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s influence, it is important to note that this factor does not directly impact the scientist’s ranking position.
The final ranking positions are established exclusively based on the D-index derived from data aggregated by OpenAlex and CrossRef—both of which represent the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases currently accessible to the research community.
