A researcher's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that uniquely evaluates scholarly output and citation impact restricted to the analyzed discipline—in this case, Microbiology. This discipline-specific approach ensures that only publications and citations relevant to the subject area contribute to the ranking, thereby providing a focused measure of scientific influence.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking scope encompassed an extensive assessment of 187,659 scientist profiles extracted from a variety of trusted bibliometric sources across all scientific disciplines. Within this broad analysis, 6 scientists specializing specifically in Microbiology were examined in detail.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, each scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 40, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be concentrated in the field of Microbiology. Additionally, consideration was given to scientists’ awards and achievements within the discipline, underscoring recognized excellence and contribution.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is calibrated in increments of 10, based on the total estimated population of scholars in each discipline. This calibration ensures the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars. Moreover, to maintain coherence between general scholarly impact and disciplinary focus, a proximity criterion was applied whereby a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index must differ by no more than 30%.
Verification and Validation Procedures
The researchers responsible for this ranking acknowledge the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute evaluative tool. Consequently, every scientist profile was subjected to manual verification and cross-correlation with publications indexed across a diverse array of verified and trustworthy sources.
While not directly influencing a researcher’s rank, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings was also recorded as a valuable secondary signal of a scientist's contribution to their field. This multidimensional validation process enhances the ranking's credibility and reliability.
The ranking position is ultimately established using each researcher's D-index, meticulously calculated through data gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the most prominent and well-regarded bibliometric databases accessible to the academic community.
