Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking incorporates an extensive dataset comprising 188,153 scientist profiles identified across diverse bibliometric databases and examined across all disciplines. Specifically, for the Medicine discipline, 2,000 scientists were carefully assessed to curate this list.
Eligibility for inclusion required that a scientist’s D-index reach a minimum threshold of 70, with the majority of their tier publications firmly rooted in Medicine. Furthermore, notable awards and achievements within the medical field were also considered as qualitative indicators of scientific distinction.
The D-index cutoff is systematically calibrated in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of researchers in each discipline. This ensures that the ranking consistently captures the top 1% of leading scholars. Additionally, qualification mandates that a researcher’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index maintain a proximity of no more than 30% difference, thereby reinforcing domain relevance.
Verification Process and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data provides an incomplete picture on its own, the Research.com team employed rigorous manual verification practices. Every scientist profile was cross-referenced against publications indexed in a broad range of reputable sources to ensure accuracy and account for anomalies or potential biases in automated datasets.
Although not a direct factor in determining ranking position, the quantity of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution and prominence within their specialty.
The position in the ranking is ultimately based on each researcher’s D-index derived from trusted databases, primarily OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are globally acknowledged as the preeminent bibliometric repositories accessible to the research community.
