A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized variant of the traditional H-index that exclusively incorporates publications and citations relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Medicine. This focus on discipline-specific output allows for a more precise and fair assessment of a researcher’s impact within their field.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
For this edition, a total of 188,153 scientist profiles were examined across all disciplines using the aggregated bibliometric sources, with a targeted focus on identifying the top scientist in Medicine specifically within Costa Rica. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist must possess a minimum D-index of 70. Additionally, the majority of a qualifying scientist’s tier publications must predominantly be in the area of Medicine. Awards and notable achievements within the medical field were also considered as supplementary factors to provide additional context to each scientist’s scholarly impact.
The D-index threshold is dynamically scaled in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers in Medicine are comprehensively incorporated into the ranking. Furthermore, to guarantee alignment between general and discipline-specific impact, the difference between a researcher’s overall H-index and their Medicine-focused D-index is maintained at 30% or less.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or quality, the Research.com team undertakes thorough manual verification and cross-correlation of all scientist profiles. Each profile is carefully substantiated against publications listed in a broad range of trustworthy scientific sources to validate accuracy and consistency.
While the number of publications in renowned journals and prestigious conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s rank, such metrics are acknowledged as valuable secondary signals reflecting a scientist’s contribution and visibility in a specific research area.
The final positioning in the ranking is established based on each researcher’s D-index calculated from data drawn principally from OpenAlex and CrossRef—recognized as two of the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
