The bibliometric data was systematically collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring that the ranking reflects the most current and comprehensive snapshot of citation-based metrics.
Each scientist’s position within the ranking framework is determined by their D-index, or Discipline H-index, a refined bibliometric measure that considers only publications and citation counts within the specific discipline—in this case, Mathematics. This discipline-focused approach enables a more precise evaluation of scholarly impact specific to the research area under review.
Scope and Selection Criteria
The ranking process involved a thorough examination of 279,971 scientist profiles extracted from a wide range of bibliometric sources across all disciplines. Within this expansive pool, profiles of 1,061 scientists specifically identified in the field of Mathematics were scrutinized for inclusion in the ranking.
To qualify for the Mathematics ranking, a scientist’s D-index was required to be at least 30. In addition, a majority of their tier publications needed to be concentrated within Mathematics, confirming their core research focus. Recognition of awards and notable achievements within the discipline also factored into the assessment, further ensuring that esteemed contributions were accurately reflected.
The D-index threshold is dynamically calibrated in increments of 10, reflecting the total estimated number of scholars per discipline. This adaptive threshold ensures that roughly the top 1% of leading scholars within each field are included. Additionally, to maintain disciplinary consistency, only scientists whose general H-index and D-index differ by 30% or less were considered, ensuring alignment between their overall research impact and their discipline-specific influence.

While the positioning in the ranking is exclusively based on the D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef—arguably the most authoritative and consistently maintained bibliometric databases—the number of publications in leading journals and prominent conference proceedings is also reviewed.
