Data Sources and Ranking Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Animal Science and Veterinary Scientists in Finland Ranking is based on a robust collection of bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable databases. These sources provide comprehensive metadata on scientific publications, citations, and authorship profiles, enabling the construction of accurate and domain-specific citation metrics.
Bibliometric data utilized for the citation-based metrics of this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively incorporates papers and citation counts pertinent to the examined discipline of Animal Science and Veterinary. This ensures that ranking positions reflect scholarly output and impact specific to the relevant field rather than general research activity.
Scope of Research Considered
The ranking evaluates a total of 279,971 scientist profiles previously identified from a wide array of bibliometric data sources across all scientific disciplines. Within this extensive dataset, 28 scientists specializing specifically in Animal Science and Veterinary research were examined for inclusion in this ranking.
To qualify for the ranking, a scientist’s D-index must be at least 20, and a majority of their tier publications need to be focused within the domain of Animal Science and Veterinary sciences. Beyond bibliometric indicators, scientists’ awards and notable achievements in this field were also considered to further validate their impact and leadership.
The D-index threshold is calibrated as increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars per discipline, ensuring that approximately the top 1% of leading researchers are consistently incorporated in the ranking. Additionally, a proximity criterion is applied whereby the difference between a scientist’s overall general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index is maintained at 30% or less, reflecting a strong alignment of their research contributions within the designated field.
Additional Verification Practices
At Research.com, we recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot comprehensively capture the multifaceted contributions of researchers. To safeguard the accuracy and credibility of this ranking, every scientist profile underwent meticulous manual verification. This involved cross-correlation against publications listed in a wide spectrum of trustworthy sources, ensuring alignment of authorship and publication records.
While not factored directly into the ranking placement, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution to the Animal Science and Veterinary domains. Our rankings are fundamentally grounded in the D-index calculated from data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef — among the most authoritative and widely used bibliometric repositories accessible to the academic community.
