What can I expect from a Counseling degree in Florida?

Expect counseling training to combine theory with supervised practice. At the master's level, clinical mental health counseling generally prepares students to assess concerns, plan treatment, practice counseling skills, and complete supervised field experiences. A school counseling program instead centers on students' academic, career, and social-emotional needs in educational settings. The degree title alone does not establish eligibility for either credential.

A bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field can be useful preparation and may support entry-level human-services work, but it is not a substitute for the graduate education required for independent clinical mental health counseling licensure in Florida. If your goal is psychotherapy, compare master's programs against the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling's requirements. If your goal is school counseling, check Florida Department of Education certification requirements instead.

Popularity can reveal programs many students consider, but it cannot tell you which curriculum fits your intended license. For another perspective on academic and outcome measures, compare Research.com's best counseling programs alongside the ranking in this article.

Where can I work with a Counseling degree in Florida?

Work settings depend on the credential, not simply the degree name. Clinical mental health counselors may work in community mental health agencies, outpatient practices, hospitals, or substance-use treatment settings; school counselors work in K-12 education. Rehabilitation counselors may work with disability-services organizations and vocational rehabilitation programs (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Florida's geography affects placement planning. A student near a large metro area may be able to compare several kinds of clinical sites, while a student studying farther from campus should ask whether the program approves supervisors near home. Before enrolling, ask who secures placements, whether evening or weekend hours are realistic, and whether your preferred type of site has recently hosted students. An available internship is not necessarily a paid one.

Frequently asked questions about Counseling degree in Florida

Can I become a licensed mental health counselor with a bachelor's degree?

No. Florida's LMHC pathway requires qualifying graduate education plus additional licensure steps, including supervised experience (Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling).

Does a Florida counseling master's automatically qualify me for licensure?

No. Eligibility depends on the exact curriculum and training, followed by other state requirements. Ask the program to document how its track aligns with your intended Florida credential.

Is CACREP accreditation required for every counseling job?

No single accreditation rule covers every job. CACREP is programmatic accreditation that can matter for particular credential pathways or employers; check the requirements for your specific goal rather than assuming institutional accreditation answers the question (CACREP; relevant Florida credentialing authority).

Can I complete a counseling degree entirely online?

You may be able to take coursework online, but licensure-oriented programs still require approved supervised clinical experiences. Confirm any campus visits and whether local placements are permitted before enrolling.

Is a public university always cheaper than a private university?

Not necessarily. Compare your residency rate, total required credits, fees, aid, and time away from paid work. The lowest published tuition may not produce the lowest personal cost.

Should I choose school counseling or clinical mental health counseling?

Choose based on the credential and setting you want. School counseling generally targets K-12 work and educator certification; clinical mental health counseling targets mental health practice and a separate Florida licensure pathway (Florida Department of Education; Florida licensing board).
