What is the history of Florida State University?

The history of Florida State University can be traced back to the early 1800s, with its origins rooted in the West Florida Seminary, established in 1851. The seminary began offering classes in Tallahassee in 1857 after absorbing the Florida Institute, which had been created to encourage the state to place the seminary in the city. The site where the historic Westcott Building now stands, formerly the Florida Institute property, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously used higher education location in Florida.

During the American Civil War in 1863, Florida's Confederate government incorporated a military school into the institution, renaming it the Florida Military and Collegiate Institute. The school organized student soldiers into a unit that successfully defended Tallahassee against a Union attack at the Battle of Natural Bridge. The Florida Legislature passed the Buckman Act in 1901, which restructured the state's higher education system.
