To help schools and students cope with the unexpected disruptions to learning calendars amid the lockdowns and school closures, the EdTech industry stepped up and made available to the public hundreds of free or very affordable online learning applications. Before the pandemic, EdTech was projected to grow into a $2 billion-dollar industry by 2021. In just the first half of 2021, investment intelligence firm HolonIQ reports that Ed Tech investments have already hit $10 billion.
From 2010 to 2014, there was a slow 35% growth. And from 2014 to last year, 2020, there was a steady 44% climb. Richard Price of the Clayton Christensen Institute, which studies ‘disruptive innovations,’ says that the traditional on-campus model of learning has “failed to create an equity of access to education.” In fact, it continues to inhibit access because of its prohibitive cost. But EdTech companies and even traditional learning institutions who now offer online degrees are doing exactly the opposite by making the same content available at just 60% of what in-person classes cost.
Early adopters like the University of Illinois shocked many when they dropped the price of an entire MBA program to $22,000.
