Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is a public research university in Carbondale, Illinois. It was founded in 1869 as Southern Illinois Normal University and received its current name in 1947. It is the oldest and the primary institution of the Southern Illinois University system. It is recognized as the first American university to offer a special course that supports students with particular learning disabilities.
