The University of Thessaly (UTH) is a public university located in Thessaly, Greece. Founded in 1984, it boasts of being one of the largest universities in the country. The university’s mission is to promote scientific knowledge. It does this through research and contribution to the community’s cultural and economic development.

The university offers over 100 undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These are taught across eight faculties: Science, Technology, Engineering, Health sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Economics and Business Humanities and Social Sciences, and Physical Education and Sport Science. There are over 30 departments scattered across Volos, Lamia, Larisa, Karditsa, and Trikala. UTH also has over 600 Erasmus bilateral agreements in over 40 countries.

When it was first established, the first departments focused on agricultural, educational, and technological sciences. In 1998, UTH elected its first Rectorate Board. In 2013, the university absorbed the department of computer science and biomedical informatics from the defunct University of Central Greece. In June 2013, UTH expanded to the city of Lamia in central Greece.

Notable alumni from UTH include Alexandros Meikopoulos, member of the Hellenic Parliament; environmentalist and former Member of the European Parliament Kriton Arsenis; and karateka athlete Eleni Chatziliadou.

The University of Thessaly is considered one of the best global universities in Greece. It has been given top 600 to 1000 rankings by Times Higher Education, Academic Ranking of World Universities, Center for World University Rankings, and U.S. News.

Moving forward, the university plans to build international cooperation, maximize human resources, and come up with modern research structures that will bring in young scientists. To date, it has been involved in interesting research, one of which is the excavation of artifacts from the islet of Vryokastraki. A team of archeologists from various schools in Greece was able to unearth inscriptions that give insights into the history of the island, including the people who lived there and how it was governed. In the field of technology, they have devised ways to block hackers from attacking charge-as-you-drive electric vehicles through algorithms based on machine learning.

UTH has also been doing its part in combating the global pandemic. The vice president of the UTH School of Health Sciences is part of the MSC Cruises Blue Ribbon COVID Expert Group. The group will provide guidance on the health and safety protocols to implement in cruise operations. Researchers from UTH have also investigated the impact of temperature on the spread of COVID-19, as well as produced protective masks using 3D printing technology.
