Overview

The University of São Paulo (USP) is one of the most prestigious schools in Brazil and the largest public university in the country. Ranked among the top 100 universities globally in terms of reputation by Times Higher Education, the school has 11 campuses, offering a wide scope of courses, with its faculty figuring heavily on local and international research.

Established in 1947, USP is the product of a merger between reputable educational institutions such as the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages, and Sciences, the Polytechnic School of Engineering, the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture, and the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences, among others. The school has since expanded its geographical coverage and the amenities extended to students and faculty to become one of the largest universities in South America.

Currently, USP has approximately 97,000 enrolled students and 5,000 faculty members. It is also home to nearly 50 libraries, several medical facilities, museums and art galleries, theaters, and its own television channel. As for its educational offerings, the university has around 250 undergraduate and 240 graduate programs across a broad range of disciplines, with medicine, arts and humanities, life sciences, and social sciences among its many core offerings.

In regard to research, USP has received more than 1,000 awards and distinctions. It is also responsible for more than a quarter of all Brazilian scientific papers of note, making the institution the country’s largest research facility. The university’s impact extends beyond the scholarly realm, as it has produced over 10 Brazilian heads of state, numerous executives of large multinational companies, esteemed writers, architects, and professionals from the entertainment industry.

USP also has a bustling international program as it welcomes a fairly large number of students, faculty, and researchers coming from other parts of the globe yearly. Its International Cooperation Office has prepared undergraduate and post-graduate degrees for students as well as research collaboration programs for researchers. To alleviate the communication barrier, a free Portuguese course is offered to the international community. Additionally, the school has forged partnerships with institutions from all across the globe for its exchange program, which encourages the participation of students and faculty members.

Looking towards the future, USP intends to maintain its image as a producer of thought leaders and notable research, whose results are beneficial to local and global societies. And, with its numerous contributions to research and notable alumni, the school has certainly delivered on its objectives.
