Overview

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is the first university research park in the state of Maryland. It was founded in 1966 as part of the University System of Maryland on the land of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples. At the time, it was the first public institution of higher education to admit students, regardless of their ethnicity. Enrollees at the university numbered only 750, spread across three buildings with 45 faculty members to teach them and 35 support staff to assist in the operation of the university.

Currently, this suburban university has the fourth highest enrollment in the University System of Maryland. Students matriculate in over 40 undergraduate programs or majors and more than 30 graduate programs. Among these, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is best known for its courses in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, and public policy. The institution is also well-regarded for its liberal arts and social sciences.

As the university considers itself an honors college, students can only expect rigorous academic activities and requirements. It is for this reason that the institution is regarded as an excellent research hub. The fields that its researchers focus on are environmental sciences, health and life sciences, data sciences and national security, civic engagement, and public humanities and arts. The university has specific spheres of concentration in each area as well.

To ensure continuous research undertakings, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County expends upwards of $80 million annually. A part of that, more than $50 million, comes from federal sources.

Apart from its involvement in the above-mentioned fields of inquiry, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, also works with NASA. Its centers at NASA Goddard are funded by the agency. These are the Center for Space Sciences and Technology, Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, and the Goddard Planetary Heliophysics Institute .

For its commitment to research, the students and faculty of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, have received prestigious awards, such as the NSF Career Awards. A couple of whom are Dr. Jianwu Wang and Dr. Naghmeh Karimi, who received the awards for their work on Information Systems and Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, respectively. In addition, researchers connected with the University have become recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for their contributions to the fields of Science and Engineering.

Moreover, a handful of the university’s faculty members have received fellowships, awards, and grants from various organizations. Examples of these awarding bodies are the Fulbright, CDC Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
