Osaka University (University of Osaka or Handai) is a public research university in Osaka, Japan. It is regarded as the top university in the country, along with Kyoto University and the University of Tokyo, and is promoted by the Japanese government to help its alumni assume global leadership. Osaka consistently places inside the top 20–50 major world university rankings and enjoys a solid base of international students.

Officially established in 1931, the university traces its modern origins to the country’s imperial age in the middle to late 19th century. It is one of the so-called Imperial universities established from 1886 to 1939 as part of Japan’s modernization efforts. In 1947, the university assumed its current name, offering Science, Engineering, Medicine, Law and Letters as its initial postwar courses.

Today, Osaka University has 11 faculties administering undergraduate and graduate schools across three campuses in Toyonaka, Suita, and Minoh. The faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Human Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences are grouped with Engineering in the Suita campus, which also houses the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, the Osaka University Hospital, and part of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. The campus offers English-based courses in sociology, anthropology, education, behavioral sciences, philosophy, psychology and human development, among others.

Meanwhile, the Toyonaka campus is host to the faculties of Law, Economics, Letters, Science, and Engineering Science. The Graduate Schools of International Public Policy, Language and Culture are also located here. On the other hand, courses in language studies are mostly found in the Minoh campus, which also houses the School of Foreign Studies.

Another campus in Nakanoshima used to house the faculties in the Suita campus, but is now home to the university’s special programs such as adult education classes and non-academic community programs. It is also a venue for information exchange.

Likewise, Osaka University has international exchange agreements with major universities worldwide. They include Cornell University, CalTech, National University of Singapore, Seoul National University, Australian National University, the University of Bologna, the University of Cologne, and the University of Oxford.

As a research-driven university, Osaka has 21 research institutes, 2 teaching hospitals, and 4 libraries.

The university has produced notable alumni in different specialties, including Hideki Yukawa (Nobel Prize in Physics), Hidesaburo Hanafusa (Lasker Award), Shimon Sakaguchi (discovered regulatory T-cells), and Ryotaro Shiba (author).
