Overview

The National University of Kaohsiung, in the Nanzih District, is the lone university instituted in Taiwan at the beginning of the millennium. Though it is a relatively young institution for higher education, the university is succeeding in its aim to revolutionize the traditional industries in the area. As a result, it is also accomplishing its goal to help the economy of Southern Taiwan.

This public national institution opened with five colleges: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Management, Law, Engineering, and Language. Among the diverse academic fields that the National University of Kaohsiung covers are western languages and eastern languages as well as their literature; architecture; crafts and design; law; applied economics; chemical and materials engineering; civil and environmental engineering; and Asia-Pacific industrial business management. Among these, the latter is specifically devised for molding professionals who will lead in the industries they enter in the future.

Apart from those, the National University of Kaohsiung has an Institute of Business Management, along with an Institute of Statistics under the college of Science that works on industrial and financial statistics.

To assist its students in their academic and research pursuits, the national University of Kaohsiung offers abundant resources in its Library and Information Center. Students can also gain access to a wide range of online resources and other digital information. These include the theses and dissertations of former students.

In terms of research, the university has faculty members and affiliated researchers who have published studies in a wide array of fields. Many of their efforts are concentrated on engineering, computer science, materials science, physics and astronomy, and mathematics. Plus, there are those who have worked on multidisciplinary projects. Within the university, they can perform these endeavors in any of the research centers: Advanced Business Education Center, Fastener and Steel Research Center, and Center for Built Environment Sustainable Technology.

The university’s researchers actively collaborate with colleagues from different universities in Taiwan. In addition, they extensively work with researchers from the United States, Japan, Vietnam, and Norway. Apart from educational institutions, there have been collaborations with hospitals, laboratories, and corporations.

These wide partnerships allow the National University of Kaohsiung to work towards its thrust to incorporate education and research with industrial development. On top of that, its works in the social sciences and arts and humanities enable it to empower the humanities and move towards technological innovation. And since the vision of the foundation of the university is to strengthen the economy of the south, it develops talents that can help make this a possibility.
