Overview

The Australian National University (ANU) is a public research university in Canberra, Australia. It consists of seven teaching and research colleges, plus several national institutes and academies. It was created in 1946 through the act of the government of Australia. The only one in Australia founded by the parliament, it is considered the national university of the country.

ANU is regarded as one of the top research universities in the world, consistently ranking among the top 100 universities conducted by various organizations. Notably, its earth and marine science, geography, anthropology, geology, sociology and philosophy are well cited.

The university hosts over 20,000 students in its undergraduate and graduate schools supported by nearly 4,000 faculty and staff.

ANU’s history can be traced back to Canberra University College established in 1929, the first national school for higher learning in the newly established capital of Australia at that time. Sir Robert Garran, a drafter of the country’s constitution and Australia’s first Solicitor-General, led the founding of the school.

In 1960, the college was annexed to ANU as the university’s School of General Studies with an initial academic programs in economics, law, arts, and science. Later, more departments were added including Oriental studies and engineering. In 1992, the ANU Institute of the Arts was opened and, eight years hence, the university established its medical school backed by the federal government.

ANU counts in its alumni and faculty six Nobel laureates and 49 Rhodes scholars. It has produced so far two prime ministers, over a dozen heads of government departments in Australia, and 30 Australian ambassadors.

Among its colleges and schools, the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific boasts one of the largest concentrations of experts in the English-speaking world dedicated to Asian and Pacific studies and languages. The college is also home to the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre.

Meanwhile, the College of Business and Economics conducts research and teaching in the fields of accounting, finance, economics, actuarial studies, marketing, statistics, and management. Its engineering and computer science college is also home to the National Computational Infrastructure National Facility. Other colleges include medicine, biology and environment, physical and mathematical sciences.

Students at ANU can also avail of exchange agreements with leading universities in the world, such as the National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and Seoul National University. ANU also has study-abroad collaboration with the University of California, the University of Toronto, ETH Zurich, Bocconi University in Italy, the University of Copenhagen, and Trinity College Dublin.

The ANU library system has over 2.5 million printed volumes distributed across its six branches. Likewise, five learned societies are housed in ANU, such as the Academy of the Social Sciences, the Australian Academy of Law, and the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
