Overview

HEC Montréal is a top public business school in Canada. The institute was established in 1907 as the graduate school of the Université de Montréal. Today, it offers programs for undergraduates, graduates, and postgraduates. Also, it offers a joint program for an Executive MBA with McGill University.

HEC Montréal offers programs, including a PhD in administration, a Master of Science in Administration, a Master of Management, and a Bachelor of Business Administration. There are also programs with professional certificates, with diplomas for a specialized management field. Professional certificate programs only last a year and are equivalent to 30 university North American credits.

The institution offers undergraduate students three different course formats for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Core courses can be offered in French, a bilingual mix of French and English, or a French-Spanish-English trilingual format. It takes three years for Quebec students to finish the course after completing a two-year generalist education. However, it takes four years for foreign students as they have to undergo a preparatory year with classes for languages, algebra, calculus, and a general introduction to economics and the business world today.

The Master of Science in Administration is offered for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in other fields outside of management. Candidates who are graduates of psychology and mathematics are also accepted.

The institution also offers five professional masters courses. These are (1) Master of Laws, (2) Master of Management in Cultural Enterprise, (3) Master of Management in Sustainable Development, (4) Master of Science in Electronic Commerce, and (5) Master in International Arts Management. Moreover, there are short graduate programs in specialty areas such as User Experience, Supply Chain Management, Human Resources, Business Internationalization, and Business Analytics in the Energy Sector, among others.

HEC Montréal also offers Professional Education Programs. There are three degree programs: the MBA, the Executive MBA, and the MBA-Technological Innovation and Commercialization (MBA-TIC). The Executive MBA was created for executives with more than 15 years of experience. It is in partnership with McGill University. On the other hand, the MBA-TIC offering is reserved for engineers exclusively. It is offered collaboratively with Polytechnique Montréal.

The institution’s PhD program is offered in a bilingual format with three other prestigious universities in Montréal. These are the Université du Québec à Montréal, McGill University, and Concordia University.

Notable HEC Montréal graduates include Thierry Vandal, the CEO of Hydro-Quebec, Antoine Arnault, the CEO of Berluti, and François Legault, the Premier of Quebec and Air Transat founder.
