Overview
Aix-Marseille University (Aix-Marseille Université or AMU) is a public university in Provence, France. It was established in 1409 originally as the University of Provence. In 2012, the university merged with Paul Cézanne University and the University of the Mediterranean to form the largest institution of higher learning in France. It has an estimated population of around 80,000 students, which includes over 10,000 international students from over 120 countries.
Ranked among the top 101–150 universities in the world, AMU is known for its excellence in teaching and research in the fields of Physics, Mathematics, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy, Life and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, and Natural Sciences.
The university is built around five major areas of discipline, namely, Science and Technology, Health, Economics and Management, Law and Political Science, and Arts, Letters, Languages and Human Sciences. The university is composed of 18 schools and faculties and it operates five main campuses spread around Marseille and Aix-en-Provence.
Most undergraduate programs are provided in either French or English, partially or completely. The Faculty of Arts, Letters, Human, and Social Sciences, for example, offers a Bachelor in History of Art and Archeology and a Bachelor in English Language, Literature and Civilization programs.
Its Graduate School of Management, likewise, offers postgraduate degree programs in International Financial Management, Internal Audit of Organizations, etc. It also has a joint PhD program with the ESSEC Business School. In addition, AMU’s Graduate School of Science and Engineering offers several 5-year specialist courses in New Technologies, which are a path toward an engineering degree.
In terms of research and innovation, AMU has over a hundred research centers and institutes. The university focuses on five interdisciplinary and intersectoral research areas, namely Advanced Science and Technology, Health and Life Sciences, Humanities, Environment, and Energy. The university also collaborates with major external organizations, including the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
The university has around 60 libraries in its library system, which is considered the biggest and most diverse among all academic libraries in France. AMU is a member of various academic associations, such as the Mediterranean Universities Union and the European University Association.
The university has produced numerous alumni notable in the fields of arts, academe, science, business, and politics. These include several Nobel Prize laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, César Award recipients, as well as heads of state, business leaders, and other luminaries.
