The bibliometric data essential for creating the citation-based metrics used in this ranking were collected as of 2024-11-27. The core metric for an institution’s position in the ranking is the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-indexes) of all affiliated scholars whose primary publication area is Economics and Finance. The D-index calculates both publications and citation data within the specific discipline, thereby ensuring highly focused and discipline-relevant evaluations of academic impact.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
Our research scope is extensive, enabling a meaningful cross-section of academic talent. A total of 279,971 scientist profiles were identified from various bibliometric sources, with 12,210 scientists from the Economics and Finance domain selected for in-depth analysis. To qualify for consideration, each scientist was required to have a minimum D-index of 30. Additionally, the majority of their significant publications had to be within Economics and Finance.
Significant consideration was given to scientists' awards and achievements in the field, which contributed as distinguishing factors in the ranking process. The D-index threshold for highlighting top researchers follows an incremental step of 10, tailored for each discipline based on the estimated scholar population, while ensuring the elite top 1% of experts are represented. Furthermore, a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index was enforced to uphold disciplinary relevance.
Verification and Data Integrity Practices
We are acutely aware that bibliometric data alone cannot serve as a definitive measure of scholarly output. Therefore, manual verification of all scientist profiles was rigorously undertaken, with cross-validation against publications found in a wide array of trustworthy sources.
While the sheer number of publications in leading journals and conference proceedings is not a criterion in determining ranking position, it offers valuable supplementary insight into a scientist’s research contribution in Economics and Finance. Institutional ranking is ultimately determined by each researcher’s H-index, as recorded by OpenAlex and CrossRef—databases that are widely recognized and respected in the global research community for bibliometric data.
