Data Sources and Criteria for Ranking
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Rising Stars of Science in the World Ranking was developed using a comprehensive set of bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other authoritative databases. The ranking exclusively considers scientists whose earliest publication dates back 12 years or less, ensuring a focus on emerging researchers within the academic timeline. Bibliometric data for calculating the citation-based metrics, including the pivotal H-index, were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined primarily by their H-index, providing a robust and widely-recognized measure of both productivity and citation impact.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking rigorously examined 279,971 scientist profiles gathered from a diverse array of bibliometric sources, spanning all major scientific disciplines. To qualify for inclusion, each researcher was required to meet an H-index threshold specific to their research area—typically set at either 30 or 40—reflecting the varying publication and citation norms across fields. Beyond bibliometric metrics, consideration was also given to awards and notable achievements within each scientist’s domain, enabling a more holistic appraisal. Ultimately, only the top 1,000 scientists exhibiting the highest H-indices and demonstrable impact were featured in this esteemed listing.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
The team behind this ranking acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot capture the full scope and nuance of scholarly contributions. Consequently, all scientist profiles underwent meticulous manual verification and were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of respected and reliable sources. While the quantity of papers published in leading journals and conferences is not a determining factor for ranking position, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s influence within their scientific discipline.
Positions within the ranking are established using each researcher’s H-index as retrieved from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases currently accessible to the global research community.
