Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in Belgium Ranking is primarily founded on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other trusted data repositories. The citation-based metrics used to derive the rankings were meticulously compiled on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s standing in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which exclusively considers papers and citation metrics within the specific discipline under review. This discipline-focused approach ensures that the evaluation accurately reflects scholarly impact in Political Science.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking was developed through an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from a variety of bibliometric data sources spanning all disciplines. Of these, 28 scientists specifically identified with Political Science were evaluated for inclusion. To qualify for the ranking, a scientist’s D-index must be at least 20, and a majority of their tier publications must fall within Political Science. Additionally, consideration was given to recognized awards and notable achievements within the discipline.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the estimated number of scholars for each discipline, ensuring that the ranking captures the top 1% of leading researchers. Furthermore, a criterion requiring a proximity of 30% or less between a researcher’s general H-index and their D-index was applied to maintain the relevance and specificity of discipline-focused impact.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully encapsulate a scholar’s contribution, the Research.com team conducted a thorough manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications verified in a broad range of reputable sources to ensure accuracy and integrity.
While the ranking placement is driven exclusively by the D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef data—arguably the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases available—secondary indicators such as the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings were also reviewed. These indicators, though not directly affecting rank, provide valuable contextual information on a scientist’s influence within the field.
