Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Romania Ranking utilizes a comprehensive aggregation of bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data repositories. This synthesis of databases ensures a robust and well-rounded foundation for the ranking. The bibliometric information used to calculate the citation-based metrics was collected on January 12, 2026, guaranteeing up-to-date and relevant scientific impact measurements. A researcher's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that specifically accounts for a scholar's publications and citation performance within the examined discipline alone, thereby providing a discipline-focused reflection of scientific influence.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
An extensive review was conducted involving 188,153 scientist profiles identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all scientific disciplines. Within this dataset, 3,000 scientists specializing in Medicine were carefully examined. To qualify for inclusion in the Medicine ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 70, with the majority of their tier publications centered in the medical field. Additionally, notable awards and achievements specifically within Medicine were considered as complementary evaluative factors.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers are incorporated in the ranking. Furthermore, to maintain focus on disciplinary excellence, there is a constraint that the disparity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index remains within 30% or less, reinforcing the relevance of the discipline-specific impact metric.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Our team behind this ranking recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scientific merit. Accordingly, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification. Profiles were cross-checked against publications indexed in a wide spectrum of trustworthy and authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and relevance.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and leading conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution and stature within their specific scientific area.
The foundational metric for ranking, the D-index, is calculated solely from data retrieved from OpenAlex and CrossRef — two of the most prominent, transparent, and well-established bibliometric databases available to the research community today.
