Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Malaysia Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable bibliometric sources. The citation-based metrics used to devise the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which exclusively incorporates papers and citation metrics relevant to the examined discipline of Medicine, ensuring discipline-specific rigor and accuracy in the evaluation process.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
For this edition, a total of 188,153 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric databases and disciplines were examined. From this extensive dataset, 2,000 scientists specializing in Medicine were specifically evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index in Medicine had to meet or exceed a threshold of 70, and a majority of their tier publications needed to be concentrated within the field of Medicine. In addition to quantitative citation metrics, scientists' awards and notable achievements in the medical field were also considered as qualitative factors.
The D-index threshold is dynamically set in increments of 10, based on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars in Medicine are incorporated within the ranking. Furthermore, to ensure consistency, there is a prerequisite that the proximity between a scientist’s overall general H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index must be 30% or less, securing alignment between general and discipline-specific impact.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute measure of a scholar’s output, rigorous manual verification has been conducted for all scientist profiles. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications verified in a broad range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and validity.
Although not directly factored into the ranking position, the number of papers published in eminent journals and prominent conference proceedings is regarded as an important secondary signal of a researcher’s contribution to the field of Medicine. This reinforces the reliability of the ranking as a reflection of both scholarly influence and research quality.
The positioning of scientists within the ranking is established using their Medicine-specific D-index, leveraging data curated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and well-established bibliometric repositories accessible to the research community.
