Data Sources and Methodology
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Sri Lanka Ranking is built upon a rigorous and transparent assessment using high-quality bibliometric data. The principal sources for constructing this ranking are OpenAlex and CrossRef, both recognized as leading databases for academic research metrics, supplemented by several other reliable data resources. The bibliometric data underlying the citation-based metrics employed in the ranking were meticulously collected on 2024-11-27.
A scientist’s placement within the ranking is based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), which accounts solely for research outputs and citation metrics relevant to the specific field under evaluation. This ensures that the ranking remains focused and discipline-specific, capturing only work pertinent to Medicine in this context.
Scope of Research Considered
The ranking process entailed a comprehensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across an array of bibliometric sources, representing all academic disciplines. Specifically, for the Medicine field in Sri Lanka, 1 scientist met the inclusion criteria for this edition.
To ensure selection rigor, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 70 with the majority of their high-tier publications classified under Medicine. Consideration was also given to awards and achievements recognized in the Medicine community. Notably, the threshold D-index for inclusion is determined as an increment of 10, dependent on the estimated number of scholars per discipline. This approach guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars in each field are represented. Furthermore, a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must have a proximity of 30% or less, stressing discipline-specific excellence and focus.
Additional Verification Practices
The creators of this ranking recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot comprehensively evaluate a scholar’s academic contributions. Therefore, all scientist profiles considered were manually verified and cross-checked against publications found in a range of trusted sources. While the number of articles published in top-tier journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it is acknowledged as a valuable indicator of a scientist’s impact in their field.
The ranking is ultimately determined by each researcher’s D-index, drawing primarily on data from OpenAlex and CrossRef — the industry’s most prominent and reliable bibliometric information sources.
