All bibliometric data used to derive the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. The core metric underpinning each scientist’s position is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which is a refined variant of the traditional H-index. The D-index specifically considers only publications and citations within the examined discipline—in this case, Mathematics—thus enabling a more precise evaluation of a scientist’s impact and contribution to their specialized research area.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
Our analysis encompassed an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a wide range of bibliometric data sources covering all disciplines. Within this broad spectrum, 1,383 scientists specializing in Mathematics were specifically analyzed for this ranking.
Eligibility to appear in the ranking required a minimum D-index of 30. Additionally, a majority of a scientist’s top-tier publications had to demonstrably align with the field of Mathematics. Beyond bibliometric performance, a researcher’s awards and notable achievements within the discipline were also factored into considerations.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is adaptively set as increments of 10 relative to the total estimated number of scholars in each discipline. This approach ensures that the top 1% of leading scholars are consistently included across all subject areas. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary precision, the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index was required to remain within 30%, guaranteeing that the ranking reflects true expertise rather than general academic influence.
Verification Practices and Ranking Methodology
The team responsible for compiling the ranking recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output. Accordingly, all scientist profiles underwent manual verification and cross-correlation against publications listed in a broad array of trustworthy academic sources. This painstaking verification process ensures the integrity and credibility of the data underpinning the ranking.
While not directly influencing a researcher’s ranking position, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution and influence within their domain.
Positions within the ranking are ultimately determined by the researcher’s D-index, derived from citation data aggregated primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the two most prominent and widely acknowledged bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
