A scientist's position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that includes only the papers and citation metrics relevant to the examined discipline—Materials Science in this case. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects domain-specific scholarly impact rather than an individual’s overall research footprint, providing a more precise evaluation of expertise within the field.
Scope of Research
For this edition, a comprehensive examination was conducted across 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric sources covering all scientific disciplines. Specifically, 1,000 scientists within the field of Materials Science were individually assessed to qualify for inclusion in this ranking.
To be considered for the ranking, each scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 40. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications needed to be centered in Materials Science. Awards and achievements directly related to Materials Science were also factored into the evaluation process to further validate scholarly prominence.
The threshold for the D-index was calibrated in increments of 10, according to the estimated total number of scholars within the discipline, ensuring that the ranking consistently incorporates approximately the top 1% of leading researchers. Moreover, a proximity criterion was applied, requiring that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index remain within 30% or less, emphasizing a balanced representation of discipline-specific impact relative to overall scholarly output.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output. In recognition of this, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications listed in multiple trustworthy sources to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the data.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and influential conference proceedings is not a direct factor influencing position in the ranking, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to Materials Science. This holistic approach underlines our commitment to providing a well-rounded appraisal of academic excellence.
The positioning of researchers within the ranking is established exclusively through their D-index, based on authoritative information drawn from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are widely recognized as among the most reliable bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
