The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Materials Science Scientists in Latvia Ranking is founded primarily on comprehensive bibliometric data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other authoritative data sources. These databases provide extensive coverage of scientific publications, citation metrics, and related metadata, which form the backbone for our citation-based evaluation metrics. The bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the inclusion of the most recent and relevant research contributions.
A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that accounts exclusively for a researcher’s papers and citation metrics within the specified discipline of Materials Science. By isolating discipline-specific impact, the D-index allows for a more precise comparison of scholarly influence among peers working within the same scientific domain.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
In constructing this ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse array of bibliometric data sources spanning all scientific disciplines were examined. Among these, 2,000 scientists specifically active in Materials Science were analyzed in detail.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, researchers were required to meet several rigorous criteria:
- A minimum D-index of 40 within Materials Science, reflecting a substantial and sustained citation impact in this field.
- A majority of their tier publications (i.e., highly influential papers) had to be classified within Materials Science, ensuring the focus remained tightly aligned with the discipline.

The D-index threshold for top researchers is dynamically set at increments of 10, depending on the estimated total population of scholars in each discipline. Additionally, the evaluation requires that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index remains 30% or less, to ensure that their overall scholarly impact corresponds closely with their discipline-focused output.

Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the team behind the ranking undertook extensive manual verification processes. Each scientist’s profile was carefully cross-validated against publications listed in a broad spectrum of trustworthy, externally vetted sources to confirm authenticity and accuracy.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and prominent conference proceedings does not influence the final ranking position, it is considered a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution and prominence within Materials Science.
The final ranking positions are assigned exclusively based on the D-index derived from data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef — two of the most credible and widely used bibliometric databases accessible to the academic research community.
