All bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. The ranking methodology centers on the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that evaluates a researcher's citation impact exclusively within the specific discipline under examination. By focusing on discipline-specific publications and citations, the D-index offers a more accurate reflection of a scientist's influence and productivity in Economics and Finance.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
This ranking involved a comprehensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from an extensive range of bibliometric databases encompassing all academic disciplines. From this dataset, 4,000 scientists specializing in Economics and Finance were specifically identified and analyzed.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist was required to meet the following criteria:
- A minimum D-index of 30, ensuring a substantial impact within the relevant discipline.
- A majority of the scholar's tier publications needed to be in the field of Economics and Finance, underscoring focused research activity.
- Acknowledged awards and notable achievements within Economics and Finance were also considered as qualitative factors, supplementing the bibliometric assessment.
The D-index threshold for consideration is determined incrementally, with a step size of 10 corresponding to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach guarantees the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars in Economics and Finance. Additionally, the methodology requires that the proximity between a scientist's overall H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%, ensuring that the scholar’s general citation impact aligns reasonably with their discipline-specific influence.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
The team behind the ranking acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or impact. Therefore, all scientist profiles were meticulously manually verified. This verification process involved cross-correlating publication records against a broad spectrum of trustworthy academic sources to confirm the authenticity and relevance of the data.
Although the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, it is regarded as a valuable secondary indicator of a scholar’s contribution to the Economics and Finance research landscape.
The ranking positions are determined based on each researcher’s D-index, which is computed from data obtained through OpenAlex and CrossRef — the most prominent and well-established bibliometric databases currently accessible to the global research community.
