A scientist’s position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined bibliometric metric that accounts exclusively for papers and citations relevant to the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Business and Management. This discipline-specific focus ensures that the ranking accurately reflects scholarly impact within the domain.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
To construct a scientifically rigorous and representative ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles were examined across all disciplines using a diverse array of bibliometric data sources. Within the Business and Management discipline specifically, 1,812 scientists were identified and assessed.
In order to qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher was required to have a D-index of at least 30, reflecting a significant level of scholarly impact. Moreover, the majority of the researcher’s tier publications needed to be in the Business and Management field to ensure disciplinary relevance. Additionally, awards and notable achievements in Business and Management were considered as supplementary qualitative factors.
The D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, with the goal of encompassing the top 1% of leading researchers. Another important criterion was that the disparity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index should not exceed 30%, thereby maintaining a strong alignment between a researcher’s overall impact and their influence within the specialized field.
Verification Practices and Methodological Transparency
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the nuance of scholarly contributions, the Research.com team implemented extensive manual verification procedures. Each scientist profile included in the ranking was carefully cross-checked against publications indexed in a broad range of reputable sources, thereby minimizing errors and enhancing data integrity.
While the ranking does not use publication count in prominent journals and conference proceedings as a direct metric, these factors constitute an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s research contributions within their area of expertise.
The ranking positions are established exclusively using each researcher’s D-index derived from data harvested from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most trusted bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
