The Speedam Symposia
Started in the early 1970s, a pioneering era for international conferences in the various areas of electrical engineering, the Speedam International Symposium will reach its 26th edition in June 2022. For more than 50 years, highly relevant and topical issues have been discussed in Speedam by delegates from prestigious research institutions and companies coming from several countries around the world.
In recent years there is still a growing interest in energy conversion, in the static conversion of electric energy and in their control issues. Renewable energy, sustainable mobility and pollution reduction are top priority themes all over the world. Power electronics and electrical drives are more and more permeating industrial processes, systems for distributed electric generation, propulsion systems for road, railways, marine and other kinds of vehicles, on-board equipment for main or ancillary services, energy storage systems, robotics, household appliances and so on. Integration of technologies and smarter components and systems are some of the most relevant trends in the last decades.
These issues are indeed relevant and are worldwide studied, also because in most of the mentioned fields the market is still expanding. This justifies the effort in organizing our SPEEDAM international conference every two years, trying to focus attention on emerging topics and to update the traditional ones. In the era of “virtual” communication, technical-scientific conferences can play an important role in allowing and/or facilitating interaction between industrial and academic worlds and among people coming from multiple countries.
The long life of the Symposium is due to an established cooperation of experts and scientists in different fields coming from industry, University and research centers. Newcomers with relevant background have been always welcome and invited to cooperate, whether they are coming from traditional high-tech countries or from fast developing ones. The participation in a scientific conference is particularly fruitful for young researchers who have possibility to compare results and followed methodologies with those of other teams.
This traditionally occurs in the SPEEDAM Symposia, thanks also to a friendly context and a soft atmosphere in pleasant environments. The long-established tradition of a venue in Italian locations has not negatively influenced the strongly international character of SPEEDAM, as demonstrated in the last editions by the a large participation of delegates coming from more than 50 countries on 5 continents.
Due to the well-known emergency caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, in the last edition of 2020 the organizers were forced to make the conference “virtual” with “remote” presentation of the papers.
A conference with all the presentations remotely was a completely new experience for SPEEDAM, even if some remote sessions had already been experimented in past editions with different modalities. The virtual conference can be considered an obligatory parenthesis, but preferably not to be repeated, due to the lack of the aforementioned atmosphere that can only be created with physical presence.
Nonetheless, the 2020 edition was quite successful, as evidenced by the very numerous letters of approval from participants and observers from international institutions. In fact, unlike many other conferences, all the papers of SPEEDAM 2020 were presented live (not recorded or off-line) thanks to a considerable effort in organizing oral sessions compatible with the time-zone of 5 different continents. The presentations were accurate and really explanatory of the contents; prompted by the chairmen, several questions were asked orally or via chat; some authors were also contacted after the reference session; the “connected” people were always quite numerous.
The next SPEEDAM will once again take place with the traditional physical presence of the attendants.
It is more than a hope; the organizers are convinced that in June 2022 the effects of the pandemic will be drastically reduced and it will be possible to return to an almost normal life.
In addition to the well-known natural and landscape beauties, Sorrento has many wide open spaces; the conference center also has large rooms and common areas suitable for avoiding crowds. The weather expected in June will allow you to stay outdoors for long time, immersed in the green of the lemon groves facing the blue sea.
Let’s take back the courage and the desire to travel and actively participate in conferences to meet colleagues from all over the world and confront them!
Arrivederci to SPEEDAM 2022 in Sorrento.

Overview

The comprehensive ranking presented on this page features scientific conferences within the field of Engineering and Technology. Developed by Research.com—a leader in providing authoritative data on scientific research contributions since 2014—this ranking aims to guide scholars, professionals, and institutions seeking insight into the most influential gatherings in the discipline.

Conference positions are determined utilizing a distinct bibliometric score, an innovative metric created exclusively by Research.com. This score is calculated based on the estimated h-index, supplemented by the number of leading scientists who have actively participated in each conference over the past three years. The Impact Score values integrated into this ranking were collected on 2024-11-27 to ensure the relevance and accuracy of the assessment.

The rigorous process involved an exhaustive review of more than 2,262 conferences. These were meticulously selected following a thorough evaluation of over 26,934 scientific documents published within the recent three-year period. Contributions were scrutinized from 9,385 esteemed scientists recognized for their expertise in Engineering and Technology. This multi-stage analysis, led by field experts, emphasizes the depth, care, and objectivity underlying the final rankings.

Returning Authors Index

A very common phenomenon observed among researchers publishing scientific articles is the intentional selection of conferences they have already attended in the past. In particular, it is worth analyzing the case when the authors participate in the same conference from year to year.

The Returning Authors Index presented below illustrates the ratio of authors who participated in both a given as well as the previous edition of the conference in relation to all participants in a given year.

Returning Institution Index

The graph below shows the Returning Institution Index, illustrating the ratio of institutions that participated in both a given and the previous edition of the conference in relation to all affiliations present in a given year.

The experience to innovation index

Our experience to innovation index was created to show a cross-section of the experience level of authors publishing at a conference. The index includes the authors publishing at the last edition of a conference, grouped by total number of publications throughout their academic career (P) and the total number of citations of these publications ever received (C).

The group intervals were selected empirically to best show the diversity of the authors' experiences, their labels were selected as a convenience, not as judgment. The authors were divided into the following groups:

  • Novice - P < 5 or C < 25 (the number of publications less than 5 or the number of citations less than 25),
  • Competent - P < 10 or C < 100 (the number of publications less than 10 or the number of citations less than 100),
  • Experienced - P < 25 or C < 625 (the number of publications less than 25 or the number of citations less than 625),
  • Master - P < 50 or C < 2500 (the number of publications less than 50 or the number of citations less than 2500),
  • Star - P ≥ 50 and C ≥ 2500 (both the number of publications greater than 50 and the number of citations greater than 2500).

The chart below illustrates experience levels of first authors in cases of publications with multiple authors.
