Xiangtan University

Overview

Xiangtan University is a higher education institution based in Hunan, China. It is jointly sponsored by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Hunan Provincial People's Government, and the Ministry of Education. It consists of 22 full-time colleges serving over 36,000 undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students. Consistently rated as excellent by the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate education evaluation, Xiangtan University boasts of a highly-regarded reputation in terms of quality education.

Established in 1958, the university was founded based on the initiative of Mao Zedong, the Chinese communist revolutionary who founded the People's Republic of China. In its founding year, Mao Zedong himself inscribed the name of the university and encouraged administrators to make it an outstanding higher education institution. Over the years, the institution has developed into a key comprehensive university and has maintained its position as one of China’s leading higher education institutions.

Xiangtan University is organized into several schools, colleges, and academic departments, with more than 1,000 full-time faculty members who boast of senior professional titles, doctoral degrees, and overseas experience in research and study. It is listed as one of the 16 key comprehensive universities in China by the State Council and in terms of academic quality, it is a highly regarded institution in the country.

Internationally, Xiangtan University is known for its high-quality education and world-class academic disciplines. With more than 60 global partners, it attracts many students from all across the globe. It has also established more than 90 cooperation agreements with higher education institutions from several countries, including Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Ukraine, Russia, and Australia. With an open and inclusive learning approach, Xiangtan University supports and organizes plenty of academic and research conferences at national and international levels.

Furthermore, the university serves as home to various student associations, such as the Union of Xiangtan University Student Associations, a self-governing organization responsible for the coordination, supervision, and management of 83 other student unions found at the university. To promote public welfare, culture, arts, technology, sports, and academic research, the university strongly encourages each undergraduate student to participate in at least one student association as part of his or her university life.

Xiangtan University also houses an award-winning library that has millions of printed books, periodicals, ebooks, Chinese and foreign e-journals, and master and doctoral theses. It belongs to the China Academic Library and Information System and has received plenty of honorable titles, such as the Hunan Culturally Civilized Unit and National Advanced Library.
