Overview

Rice University is a private research institution located at the heart of Houston, Texas. It is classified as an R1 University, given its high research output, and is currently a member of the Association of American Universities. The institution has been lauded by university ranking organizations for its research on material science. After all, Rice’s dedication to research is what sets it apart from a lot of other universities.

Furnishing more than 50 majors and over 24 minors, Rice is known for the strength of its applied science programs, especially in the fields of space science, chemical analysis, heart research, nanotechnology, and signal processing. It also promotes flexibility in learning by allowing students to select their preferred courses, on top of requiring them 12 hours of study in fields like the social sciences, humanities, and applied sciences.

Rice’s academic programs are divided into 11 colleges and eight schools, delving into a wide variety of disciplines, such as engineering, natural sciences, architecture, social sciences, humanities, and music. It also offers comprehensive graduate and professional programs. Furthermore, the university has a highly regarded business incubator program, the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, which aids students in pursuing their entrepreneurial ventures, backed by research, collaboration, and mentorship.

Founded in 1912, Rice was born out of millionaire businessman William Marsh Rice’s intent to build an institution that promotes the advancement of science, art, and literature as a present to the city of Houston. His chartered intent was enacted posthumously, as Rice’s first president Edgar Lovett took inspiration from the architecture of the University of Pennsylvania and Cambridge’s residential college system in establishing the new university. The school’s initial class had 77 students.

As of 2020, Rice has opened its doors to over 7,000 learners, around 700 professors, and more than 2,000 administrative staff. Among its alumni network of over 50,000, more than 100 were Fulbright Scholars, 65 Watson Fellows, 25 Mellon Fellows, 25 Marshall Scholars, and 12 Rhodes Scholars as of 2011. Moreover, the school is associated with at least 86 National Science Foundation fellows, five Nobel laureates, and two Pulitzer Prize winners. Rice’s notable alumni include James Baker (U.S. secretary of state), Peggy Whitson (astronaut), Howard Hughes (director), and Fred C. Koch (founder of Koch Industries).

Rice looks to the future by continuing to develop close-knit college communities bound by groundbreaking research, collaboration, and intellectual and cultural support. It enforces learning by maintaining a student to faculty ratio of 6:1. Outside academics, the school also encourages learners to participate in its competitive sports program. Rice is part of the NCAA Division I in 14 sports.
