Overview: University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) is a renowned public research institution founded in 1925. With its headquarters in Cambridge, Maryland, USA, and additional laboratories across Maryland’s Eastern Shore, UMCES operates as a research-intensive center within the University System of Maryland. Rather than a traditional teaching campus, UMCES comprises four laboratories—Horn Point Laboratory, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Appalachian Laboratory, and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology—collectively engaging over 200 faculty, research scientists, and graduate students. As a leader in environmental research, UMCES serves as a hub for innovative science that supports the sustainable management of the world’s natural resources.
UMCES’s academic strengths lie primarily in marine, estuarine, and environmental sciences. The center is internationally recognized for its research on coastal ecosystems, climate change, fisheries, water quality, and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. Its interdisciplinary approach encourages integration between biology, chemistry, ecology, and policy, creating solutions to complex global challenges. UMCES collaborates globally, awarding joint graduate degrees with the University of Maryland College Park and participating in alliances such as the Maryland Sea Grant. With close to $30 million annually in research funding and consistent contributions to leading scientific journals, UMCES maintains a strong intellectual profile, producing research that informs environmental management worldwide.
Although it is not a traditional university with undergraduate programs, student life at UMCES centers around graduate education and research immersion. Graduate students participate in cutting-edge fieldwork, seminars, and symposia, benefitting from small cohorts and direct mentorship from distinguished scientists. A commitment to diversity and internationalization is reflected in its recruitment and community initiatives, welcoming students and researchers globally. On-site facilities provide housing and communal spaces, while access to the Chesapeake Bay and regional natural areas offers unique recreational, sporting, and educational opportunities. The institution's support services and collaborative ethos foster a collegial, inclusive environment for professional and academic growth.
UMCES’s mission is to advance scientific knowledge of the environment through research, education, and public service—committed to sustainability, innovation, and global leadership in responding to the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.
