Bournemouth University is a top-ranking public institution located in the seaside town of Dorset, England. It is organized into four faculties: the Bournemouth University Business School, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Faculty of Media and Communication, and Faculty of Science and Technology.

The university is divided into two campuses. The Talbot Campus, located at Fern Barrow, houses the main university buildings, the main library, as well as a number of student union facilities. It also contains plenty of cafes, refectories, shops, and a number of establishments that are still undergoing construction. The other campus, which is called the Lansdowne Campus, sits outside Bournemouth's town center and is home to six teaching and administrative buildings.

Established in 1992, Bournemouth University served as a predecessor to Bournemouth Municipal College. Traditionally, the college offered a handful of courses for students who wanted to take University of London degrees. By mid-1960s, the student population grew to 6,850 for day and evening courses, with the Secretary of State suggesting to the House of Commons to grant the college university status. Finally, the institution was considered as a polytechnic university and took on its current name in the year 1992.

Bournemouth University currently offers various courses in different fields of study. Serving as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the United Kingdom, the university is particularly renowned for its media courses. It has a long list of notable alumni in the media industry, most of whom have participated in award-winning productions in Hollywood, such as the films Star Wars, Gravity, Lord of the Rings, and Gladiator.

In the research department, the university fosters an ambitious, inclusive, and innovative research culture to support its staff and students. Some areas of expertise that the university is widely known for include forensic archaeology and crime scene science, with some of its faculty currently engaged in research on the genocides in Bosnia, Iraq, and Rwanda.
