Overview

Washington State University, also known as WSU, Washington State, or Wazzu, is a premier public research university. It is one of the oldest land-grant educational institutions in the American West. Furthermore, the university is the second-largest educational institution in the state of Washington, next to the University of Washington.

It is located in Pullman, Washington, which is mostly known for its vast agricultural lands and rolling hills. It operates various campuses across Washington, namely WSU Vancouver, WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities, and WSU Everett. In 2012, the university also launched WSU Online, a web-based Global Campus. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered across all campuses.

Its land-grant heritage and core mission to advance knowledge, to extend knowledge, and to apply knowledge are what drive the university. It combined its historical roots and strong research background to offer hundreds of majors, minors, and in-major specializations for undergraduate students. Furthermore, graduate, post-graduate, and professional programs are also available. Nearly all levels and disciplines provide research opportunities and internships to its students and faculty members.

Liberal arts have a significant place in various curricula across the university’s 12 colleges. Similarly, the university also offers world-class courses in Education, Communication, Business, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Additionally, it is also known for premium offerings in Engineering, Agriculture, and Veterinary Medicine due to its agricultural beginnings.

WSU invests in its research and development efforts, ranking among the top 100 research institutions in the country, according to the National Sciences Foundation. In 2018 alone, the university spent $360 million on new research, experimentations, studies, and similar endeavors. Many of which are in agriculture and similar industries. Its food science studies are also among the best in the United States. It sustains the states' yearly $29 billion food industry with new techniques, processes, and innovations.

As such, Wazzu is consistently recognized as one of the leading research bodies in the United States. It is classified as an R1: Doctoral University, the highest category under the Carnegie Classification for Doctorate-granting Universities, for its very high research activity.

The institution is also known for its active civic projects, sustainability initiatives, and environmental record. It has committed to reducing its total carbon emissions to 36% below its recorded 2005 levels across all campuses by 2035. A large part of the campus' energy consumption is powered by the on-campus steam plant that uses natural gas and diesel fuel back-up. Its active clean energy research also contributes to the population's education and new methods of saving the environment.

Washington State University is currently developing its 2020-25 strategic plan that aims to guide the evolution and innovation of its system of campuses. At its core, it focuses on Campus Culture, Student Success, Modernization, and Strategic Research Priorities. Additionally, its faculty members and students are identifying various ways for the university to better serve the public in the future.
