Established in 1964, the University of Waikato is a comprehensive university with its main campus located in Hamilton, New Zealand, and an additional campus in the city of Tauranga. As a progressive institution focused on innovative higher learning, the university provides its students with international-standard education, especially as it welcomes thousands of students from different parts of the globe annually.

The history of the University of Waikato goes back to 1956 after the people of Hamilton launched a petition to establish a university that will cater to the academic needs of New Zealand’s South Auckland region. At the time, the country was facing a shortage of teachers, so the government was also considering establishing a teachers’ college in the area.

In 1960, the Hamilton Teachers’ College opened and was combined with a fledgling branch of Auckland University. The joint campus was first set on Hillcrest’s outskirts. In 1964, the combined institution moved to Hamilton and was officially called the University of Waikato the following year.

Upon its establishment, the university primarily consisted of the School of Humanities and School of Social Sciences. About three decades later, these two schools merged to form the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In 1969, they added a School of Science, now called the Faculty of Science and Engineering. In 1972 and 1973, two more were added, the Waikato Management School and Computer Science and Computing Services, respectively. The university later established a School of Law in 1990.

As of today, the university is globally-ranked in various subject areas, including education, sociology, accounting, business management, and media studies. The University of Waikato is also a destination for Māori studies. Although the Centre for Māori Studies and Research was first included in the School of Sciences in 1972, the university officially established a separate School of Māori and Pacific Development in 1996.

Currently, the university is internationally known for its competitive research capabilities in a wide range of disciplines. They reinforce this by keeping ties with various government, commercial, and other academic institutions. Moreover, they are continually working to establish new research opportunities and partnerships.

The University of Waikato’s main campus is set on a 65-hectare park-like environment that houses a swimming pool, gym, and award-winning student center. Meanwhile, the Tauranga campus gives students and school personnel access to coastal attractions and recreational activities.

With programs designed to educate and encourage students to actively participate in academic and practical learning, and with two fully equipped campuses, the University of Waikato is more than capable of producing industry-ready graduates.
