The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) is a university located in Houston, Texas focusing on public health science. Established in 1972, it has since become the main health institution of higher learning of the State of Texas. It is strategically located at the heart of the largest medical center in the world, Texas Medical Center.

UTHealth is considered to have the most complete academic health hub on the United States Gulf Coast. It houses some of the best health-related schools in America, such as in the areas of public health, nursing, medicine, dentistry, biomedical sciences, and biomedical informatics.

The university is known for a number of achievements, such as having the first and only biomedical informatics school in the world. It also boasts of over a century of excellence in dental education.

On average, the university has a total enrollment of around 4,300 students, taught by about 2,000 teaching personnel, with approximately 4,900 staff. About 60% of its student population are graduate students, while around 30% are taking professional courses. Only 15% are undergraduate students.

Six medical schools comprise UTHealth, namely, the School of Public Health, the School of Biomedical Informatics, the School of Dentistry, Cizik School of Nursing, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the John P. & Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School. Its main teaching hospitals are the Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, and the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

It is often noted that UTHealth has more postgraduate and professional programs than undergraduate courses. Its academic programs include Master of Science in Clinical Research, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Physics, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Certificate in Public Health Informatics. It also offers fellowship and residency programs.

What’s more, the university has a number of research institutes and centers that help advance UTHealth’s mission of clinical care, research, and education. It is home to some world-class research units, such as the COVID-19 Center of Excellence, Center for Translational Injury Research, and the Texas Institute for Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases.

It is an active member of the Texas Health Science Libraries Consortium, which provides its students and staff with access and privileges to in-house and external member libraries. Some of its in-campus libraries include the main TMC Library, the UT Medical Branch Moody Medical Library, and UT School of Public Health Library.

Some of UTHealth’s notable alumni include Texas Representative Michael Burgess, NASA astronaut Serena Maria Auñón-Chancellor, professional baseball player Eddy Furniss, and Dean Xifeng Wu.
