Founded in 1240 and located in the history-rich city of Siena, Tuscany, the University of Siena—Università degli Studi di Siena in Italian, abbreviated UNISI—is one of the oldest universities in Italy. Also recognized as one of the first publicly funded universities in the country, it offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, along with single-cycle degrees in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, and law. These single-cycle degrees range from five to six years.

Steeped in the color, history, and cultural traditions of medieval Italy, the University of Siena is an organic part of the city's life, saving much of the city's historical landmarks from decay by having them designated as part of the school before transferring back ownership to the city in modern times. Much of the population of Siena is due to the large number of the university's students. Reflecting its deep connection to medieval education, the university is famous for its programs in Medicine and Law, in tandem with its more modern offerings in Management and Economics.

Notably, Pope Innocent IV spared both teachers and students of what was then still called Studium Senese from paying any tax and rendering forced labor for the state from 1252 onwards. As well, Pope John XXI had a deep connection with the university, serving as one of the School of Medicine's maestri back when he was still known as Pietro Ispano, a well-respected philosopher who also acted as Emperor Frederick II's personal physician. Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV also placed the studium population under imperial protection, in addition to giving them the authority to teach anywhere within the reaches of the empire.

The studium further rose and fell with the powers of Europe and Italy, especially with the Medicis and Florence, before emerging triumphant with the unification of Italy.

Today, the University of Siena offers a number of programs administered through multiple departments which are further grouped into five areas. These five areas are 1) Social and Political Sciences, Economics and Law, 2) Literature, Philosophy, Education and Cultural Heritage, 3) Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, 4) Biomedical and Medical Sciences, and 5) Geology, Chemistry, Biology, and the Environment. Students can avail of both undergraduate and graduate courses from any of the departments.

Basic and advanced research at the University of Siena are carried out throughout the departments. A research ethics committee—CAREUS—serves as research proposal reviewer, to ensure that experimental protocols adhere to standards of dignity and integrity while safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of participating individuals, among other pertinent areas of concern.

The University of Siena is open to international students. As well, it offers various international student exchange programs under the Erasmus+ framework and other arrangements via special agreements.

As could be expected from such a university with a long history within the heart of Europe, the University of Siena offers a vast wealth of resource materials for its students and researchers. Among these are archaeological pieces and various manuscripts, artifacts, documents, and photos, along with digital journals.
