Overview

The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a public research university located in the Nanshan District of Shenzhen in Guangdong, China. It was founded by the Ministry of Education in 2011 to become a platform for experts to experiment and develop Chinese higher education reform. Today, the institute’s graduate schools, along with other research bodies, are rapidly being recognized around the world.

The university consistently ranks among the top in the Asian region and around the world as well. It is also considered as one with the highest citation score in China, proving its ability to produce high-quality research outputs. Moreover, with their emphasis on new innovations in education and reform, the university has some of the most rigorous and detailed development plans among education institutions in the country, with their current strategies extending to 2049.

The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and international programs that focus on three goals: innovation, research, and entrepreneurship. Each department implements its unique dual-advisor system to its undergraduate programs to ensure the success of each student and maximize their university experiences. SUSTech further reinforces this by operating under the residential college system, tutorial system, and credit system.

Its departments are grouped into various schools and colleges. These include the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the College of Business, the School of Medicine, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the School of Design, and the School of Life Sciences.

Aside from academic bodies, SUSTech is also home to numerous national, ministerial, provincial, and municipal key laboratories. On top of that, it has several research institutions that focus on specific interest areas such as the Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering, the Institute of Future Networks, and the Shenzhen Grubbs Institute, among others. Furthermore, the university is committed to serving the country through its public research services platforms such as the Laboratory Animal Research, the Center for Computational Science and Engineering, and the Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center.

In addition to these laboratories, the rest of SUSTech’s campus is also built to enhance the quality of life of students. It is a combination of modern buildings, tree-lined green spaces, and streams. It is committed to adhering to environmental-friendly policies. The university also aims to have zero carbon emissions in the following years. Moreover, the campus offers residential colleges and Grade A student cafeterias.

Clubs and university activities are also offered to give students a well-rounded learning experience. Furthermore, students are encouraged to explore other initiatives such as run charitable organizations and develop new enterprises. The faculty members also have strong linkages with industries and educational institutions around the world, opening up a plethora of opportunities for students.
